Gretna is a town in Sarpy County in the state of Nebraska. The population was 5,230 at the 2010 Census. Gretna was established in the early 1870s and incorporated in 1887. The City of Gretna was named for Lois M. Gretna, the daughter of a prominent Omaha businessman. The city is located at the convergence of two major state highways, Nebraska Highway 50 and Nebraska Highway 92.
Gretna is a charming Nebraska town that is comprised of three parks and a lot of community spirit. The most popular of the parks is called the Gretna Green Park, which is home to the world’s largest wagon wheel. The park is also home to several baseball diamonds, and there are plans to build a skate park there in the future. It’s not only the parks that make Gretna a great place to live. The city is also home to various special events, including the Gretna Days Festival and the Gretna Heritage Quilt Show.
If you’re driving through central Nebraska on Interstate 80, take a look out the window: there’s a glass chapel waiting for you at the Holy Family Shrine. The shrine features the world’s largest man-made mosaic of the Blessed Mother, it’s also home to the world’s only outdoor pipe organ. The organ was built by the same German craftsmen who built the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. The Shrine embodies the beauty of the natural world and the devotion of the faithful who visit. The Shrine is designed to offer a unique experience to the guests. The Shrine is made of approximately 32,000 pieces of hand-cut glass. The interior is about 3,200 square feet and is filled with stunningly beautiful stained glass and large murals of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus, and Saint Joseph. On a clear day, visitors can see the Chapel from up to 50 feet above, and visitors can feel as if they are floating in a sea of glass. The grounds of the Shrine are landscaped with native prairie grasses, flowers, and trees.
